Uses of Proscar:

In adult men, Proscar is used to decrease an enlarged prostate (also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH). It can be used alone or in combination with other medications to alleviate BPH symptoms and possibly avoid surgery. Proscar (Finasteride) may help with BPH symptoms by reducing the need to urinate, improving urine flow with less straining, reducing the sense that the bladder isn't empty, and reducing overnight urination.

The drug was well tolerated by both groups. In addition, the pharmacokinetic analysis showed that the 5 mg daily dose of finasteride was well tolerated by the placebo group. Conclusion: Finasteride and dutasteride are equally effective in treating BPH.

The efficacy of dutasteride and finasteride was evaluated using an 8-week, randomized, double-blind, parallel group study. The study was conducted as a single-center study. Dutasteride (5-alpha reductase inhibitor), finasteride (Proscar, 1, 5-alpha reductase inhibitor), and dutasteride (Propecia, 1, 5-alpha reductase inhibitor) were given to all patients. The mean daily dose of finasteride was 1.6 mg and the mean daily dose of dutasteride was 4.2 mg. In total, there were 11 patients who had a dose-related increase of BPH from baseline to 12 weeks of treatment (mean difference [MD], 1.8 mm Hg; 95% CI, -3.1 to 4.9; p=0.01). The mean maximum plasma concentration of finasteride was 1.2 mg/mL in the finasteride group and 3.0 mg/mL in the placebo group.

In total, there were 11 patients who had a dose-related increase of BPH from baseline to 12 weeks of treatment (mean difference [MD], 10.6 mm Hg; 95% CI, -13.6 to 21.2; p=0.01). The mean maximum plasma concentration of dutasteride was 2.7 mg/mL in the dutasteride group and 3.2 mg/mL in the placebo group. The mean maximum plasma concentration of finasteride was 1.4 mg/mL in the finasteride group and 2.2 mg/mL in the placebo group.
