In adult men, Proscar is used to decrease an enlarged prostate (also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH). It can be used alone or in combination with other medications to alleviate BPH symptoms and possibly avoid surgery. Proscar (Finasteride) may help with BPH symptoms by reducing the need to urinate, improving urine flow with less straining, reducing the sense that the bladder isn't empty, and reducing overnight urination.
This medication works by lowering the quantity of DHT, a natural body hormone that drives prostate growth. Proscar isn't approved for prostate cancer prevention. It may raise the risk of acquiring a very dangerous form of prostate cancer by a small amount.
Keep a list of everything you use (including prescription and non-prescription pharmaceuticals, as well as herbal products) and discuss it with your doctor and pharmacist. Without your doctor's permission, do not begin, stop, or modify the dosage of any medications. The findings of a blood test used to identify prostate cancer may be influenced by this medicine (prostatic-specific antigen or PSA levels).
Proscar works by relaxing the blood vessels in the penis, allowing for increased blood flow, and worsening the intensity of sexual activity (e.g., getting and maintaining an erection). Finasteride causes a decrease in the amount of DHT, a natural body-nourished hormone, that can cause prostate cancer. It can also cause side effects: fluid retention, menstrual products, difficulty penetrating the vagina, etc.Side effects of ProscarAll side effects are usually mild and may go away within a few months or years. Most people who have side effects tend to respond well to treatment. If you experience any side effects, such as decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, or difficulty having an erection, stop taking Proscar and consult your doctor.
Background:The purpose of this study is to evaluate the safety and efficacy of oral administration of finasteride and dutasteride. The study population consisted of patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in the treatment of BPH or with the presence of other conditions that may interact with finasteride. Safety information was provided by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on the drug. Pharmacokinetic data were obtained from a randomized, open-label, crossover study in 679 patients with BPH. Pharmacokinetic data showed that finasteride and dutasteride were equally effective in BPH. Results showed that the finasteride dose was 5.5 mg daily administered orally in the finasteride group. The drug was well tolerated by both groups. In addition, the pharmacokinetic analysis showed that the 5 mg daily dose of finasteride was well tolerated by the placebo group. Conclusion: Finasteride and dutasteride are equally effective in treating BPH.
A double-blind, randomized, crossover study in 679 patients with BPHThe efficacy of dutasteride and finasteride was evaluated using an 8-week, randomized, double-blind, parallel group study. The study was conducted as a single-center study. Dutasteride (5-alpha reductase inhibitor), finasteride (Proscar, 1, 5-alpha reductase inhibitor), and dutasteride (Propecia, 1, 5-alpha reductase inhibitor) were given to all patients. The mean daily dose of finasteride was 1.6 mg and the mean daily dose of dutasteride was 4.2 mg. In total, there were 11 patients who had a dose-related increase of BPH from baseline to 12 weeks of treatment (mean difference [MD], 1.8 mm Hg; 95% CI, -3.1 to 4.9; p=0.01). The mean maximum plasma concentration of finasteride was 1.2 mg/mL in the finasteride group and 3.0 mg/mL in the placebo group.
The efficacy of dutasteride was evaluated using an 8-week, randomized, double-blind, parallel group study. The dutasteride (5-alpha reductase inhibitor), finasteride (Proscar, 1, 5-alpha reductase inhibitor), and dutasteride (Propecia, 1, 5-alpha reductase inhibitor) were given to all patients. The mean daily dose of dutasteride was 1.6 mg and the mean daily dose of finasteride was 4.2 mg. In total, there were 11 patients who had a dose-related increase of BPH from baseline to 12 weeks of treatment (mean difference [MD], 5.0 mm Hg; 95% CI, -6.1 to 8.5; p=0.03). The mean maximum plasma concentration of dutasteride was 2.8 mg/mL in the dutasteride group and 4.8 mg/mL in the placebo group.
In total, there were 11 patients who had a dose-related increase of BPH from baseline to 12 weeks of treatment (mean difference [MD], 10.6 mm Hg; 95% CI, -13.6 to 21.2; p=0.01). The mean maximum plasma concentration of dutasteride was 2.7 mg/mL in the dutasteride group and 3.2 mg/mL in the placebo group. The mean maximum plasma concentration of finasteride was 1.4 mg/mL in the finasteride group and 2.2 mg/mL in the placebo group.

RefreshFinasteride is used to treat men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and male pattern hair loss, also called androgenetic alopecia. BPH is caused by an enlarged prostate. Men with BPH usually have difficulty urinating, a decreased flow of urination, hesitation at the beginning of urination, and a need to get up at night to urinate. Finasteride will make these symptoms less severe and reduce the chance that prostate surgery will be needed. It may be used alone or in combination with other medicines such as an alpha-blocker to treat BPH. For men with hair loss, finasteride will increase the number of scalp hairs but will not increase the amount of body hair.
Finasteride blocks the action of an enzyme called 5-alpha-reductase. This enzyme changes testosterone to another hormone that causes the prostate to grow or hair loss in males. It will increase testosterone levels in the body, which decreases prostate size and increases hair growth on the scalp. The effect of finasteride on the prostate and scalp will only last as long as the medicine is taken. When it is stopped, the prostate begins to grow again and the hair will be lost.

Finasteride 5mg Tablet x 1 Reflections on - OnCancer of theBCLCYCLINE familyWhen taken finasteride decreases the levels of DHT in the body. It does this by increasing the amount of a natural 5-alpha-reductase enzyme located in the body, which makes prostate cells grow and grow. This increase in 5-alpha-reductase also helps to reduce prostate size. It can also cause hair follicles to shrink and hair to be less available to grow and new hair to be made from. If the condition is passing blood to your other organs, this may cause you to feel tired, weak or indigestion.
